Bitly, the popular link shortener and analytics service have recently announced that they have been spending time working on real time search.
Unlike other available search technologies who weight their results by the quantity of either the references or links, bitly weight their results by cross-platform social engagement; Bitly have also announced that they will be launching several different services based on this type of technology. With the first being called ‘Reputation Monitoring’.
To use bitly’s Reputation Monitoring, you first need to give a search term and wait for any slight changes in either engagement and or sentiment regarding any content surrounding that term. Once there is, you will be notified right away. An advantage of this new tool is that as the alerts are on bitly’s real time social data, you’ll be able to find information on the content long before it will be visible on any search engines that are based on crawling web pages and even quite possibly a long time before you would be able to see it on any news site.
We tried to use the new system – and found we could navigate around a pre-defined category (see the screenshot) but we were unclear where we could put in our own terms or whether this system came with costs. Come on Bitly… you went to all the hard work of building it and blogging about it. How do we use it?
